The GSI GXL V2 is a 300 mm screenless sim racing steering wheel with 57 mappable inputs, 62 addressable RGB LEDs and a 5 mm carbon fibre front plate, built for drivers who want the full electronics of a flagship without an LCD in the middle of the wheel.

It shares its electronics, its simOS firmware and virtually all of its controls with the Formula Pro Elite V2; what changes is that there is no display here. That absence translates into 100 g less weight, a cleaner front face and a noticeably lower price, while keeping the RGB telemetry strip, the 6.5 N·cm encoders and the thumb encoders beside your thumbs.

Key features of the GSI GXL V2

  • 55 mappable inputs with 2 paddles and 57 with the dual clutch fitted.
  • 62 individually addressable RGB LEDs across buttons, encoders and telemetry strip.
  • 3 + 10 + 3 telemetry strip: the side indicators can be assigned to traction control, ABS, flags or pit limiter.
  • 10 push buttons with 500 gf actuation, 5 five-way encoders at 6.5 N·cm with RGB backlighting and 2 thumb encoders.
  • 2 seven-way multi switches to work through menus without letting go of the wheel.
  • 5 mm carbon fibre front plate over an aluminium unibody chassis, with overmoulded silicone handles.
  • 300 mm diameter and 1.30 kg in the lightest configuration.

simOS: the GSI firmware

The GXL V2 runs on simOS, the in-house firmware from Gomez Sim Industries. The simOS desktop application is where you assign inputs, configure the LEDs and apply firmware updates; it is a free download from the manufacturer’s website.

Which version should you choose?

The wheel is ordered with 2 paddles (shifting only) or 4 paddles (shifting plus dual clutch), in aluminium or carbon fibre. Four paddles add two inputs and about 90 g, and only pay off if you race grid starts and want to manage the bite point. Carbon saves roughly 10 g and gives a slightly crisper action; aluminium costs less and lasts just as well, because the N52 magnets are the same.

What’s in the box

  • GSI GXL V2 steering wheel
  • GSI “Spec 3” coiled USB cable

The AH50 extension hub is sold separately.

Compatibility

It runs over USB on PC (Windows) and mounts on direct drive wheelbases with a 70 mm PCD, either directly or through the matching quick release or hub. GSI lists it as compatible with Simucube, Simagic via its quick release, Asetek SimSports through the Invicta QR, MOZA with the MOZA QR, VRS DirectForce Pro, Fanatec direct drive bases through the Podium Hub and, broadly, any 8 Nm or higher wheelbase.

  • Not compatible with consoles: it is a USB peripheral for PC.
  • Connect it to a powered USB hub or an active USB repeater; passive USB extension cables cause problems.
  • With no screen, numerical telemetry is read on an external dash or on your monitor; the wheel itself still shows RPM and alerts on its RGB strip.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the GXL V2 and the Formula Pro Elite V2?

The screen, and little else. The FPE V2 carries a 4.3-inch touchscreen LCD and reaches 57 inputs with a slightly different layout; the GXL V2 drops the display, settles at 62 RGB LEDs against the FPE V2’s 66 and uses a 3+10+3 telemetry strip instead of 3+14+3. Electronics, materials, simOS firmware and the 300 mm diameter are shared.

2 paddles or 4 paddles?

With 2 paddles you only get up and down shifts and the wheel weighs 1.31 kg. With 4 you add the analogue dual clutch for standing starts and weight rises to 1.40 kg. If you race with grid starts, the four paddles are worth it.

Aluminium or carbon fibre paddles?

The difference is weight, feel and price: carbon saves around 10 g and gives a slightly crisper action, aluminium costs less and holds up exactly the same. Mechanically both use the same N52 magnets.

Does it work with PlayStation or Xbox?

No. It is a USB wheel for Windows PC. There is no firmware or console licence that enables it on PlayStation or Xbox.

Do I need to install simOS?

The firmware already ships on the wheel. The simOS application is the desktop tool where inputs, LEDs and updates are configured; it is a free download from the GSI website.

Do the four finishes change anything beyond the colour?

No. Panda, Phantom, Blackout and Prime share electronics, materials, weight and functions; what changes is the printing and the colour scheme of the front plate.
