The GSI Hyper SL is a 300 mm formula-style screenless sim racing steering wheel with 72 mappable inputs, 86 addressable RGB LEDs and a 5 mm matte carbon fibre front plate — the wheel with the most controls in the entire Gomez Sim Industries range.

It shares its platform with the Hyper P1 and differs only in dropping the LCD: it keeps the 12 push buttons, the 4 thumb encoders, the 3 seven-way switches and the option of top auxiliary paddles. It is the wheel for drivers who already have an external dash mounted on the rig and would rather spend the budget on controls than on a second screen.

simOS: the GSI firmware

The Hyper SL runs on simOS, the in-house firmware from Gomez Sim Industries. The simOS desktop application is where you assign inputs, configure the behaviour of all 86 LEDs and apply firmware updates; it is a free download from the manufacturer’s website.

Which version should you choose?

The Hyper SL is ordered with 4 paddles (shifting plus dual clutch) or 6 paddles, which add two top auxiliaries for adjusting brake bias, traction control or engine maps without letting go of the wheel or looking down. Six paddles add 130 g and two inputs. The material, aluminium or carbon fibre, changes about 20 g and the feel of the action; the N52 magnets are the same.

Compatibility

It runs over USB on PC (Windows) and mounts on direct drive wheelbases with a 70 mm PCD, either directly or through the matching quick release or hub. In our own fitting experience it installs on MOZA R5, R9, R12, R16 and R21; Asetek Forte and Invicta; Simucube; Simagic; VRS Direct Force Pro; Qubic System QS-DD-20; Accuforce via its quick release, and Fanatec bases through the Podium Hub.

  • Not compatible with consoles: it is a USB peripheral for PC.
  • Connect it to a powered USB hub or an active USB repeater; passive USB extension cables cause problems.
  • With no screen, numerical telemetry is read on an external dash or on your monitor; the wheel itself still shows RPM and alerts on its RGB strip.

What is the difference between the Hyper SL and the Hyper P1?

The screen. The Hyper P1 carries a 4.3-inch touchscreen LCD and reaches 88 RGB LEDs with a 3+14+3 strip; the Hyper SL drops the display, settles at 86 LEDs and a 3+12+3 strip, and weighs slightly less. Buttons, encoders, thumb encoders, switches and construction are identical.

What are the top auxiliary paddles for?

They are two extra paddles at the top of the wheel, meant for the actions you repeat most during a race: raising or lowering brake bias, changing traction control level or cycling engine maps. Being at the top, they are worked with your index fingers without moving your hands off the grips.

4 paddles or 6 paddles?

With 4 you get shifting and a dual clutch, and the wheel weighs 1.49 kg. With 6 you add the top auxiliaries, two more inputs and 130 g. If you race endurance or categories with a lot of on-the-move adjustment, six pay off; for short stints, four are plenty.

Does it work with PlayStation or Xbox?

No. It is a USB wheel for Windows PC. There is no firmware or console licence that enables it on PlayStation or Xbox.

Do I need anything else to fit it?

Your wheelbase or quick release needs a 70 mm PCD bolt pattern. The “Spec 3” coiled cable and the label set are included; the GSI QRS-1 quick release is not.

Do I need to install simOS?

The firmware already ships on the wheel. The simOS application is the desktop tool where inputs, LEDs and updates are configured; it is a free download from the GSI website.
